7 Habits That Are Aging You Faster Than You Realize

We spend a lot of time thinking about the things we should add to our routines for better skin and health. But some of the most impactful changes come from stopping the habits that are quietly working against us every single day.


Sleeping on a Cotton Pillowcase

Cotton creates friction against your skin throughout the night, which deepens sleep lines over time and roughs up the hair cuticle. Switching to a silk or satin pillowcase is a small change with a surprisingly noticeable impact on both skin and hair quality.


Squinting at your phone

Repeatedly squinting — whether from a too-bright screen, a too-small font, or glare — contracts the muscles around your eyes hundreds of times a day. Over time, this etches crow's feet deeper into the skin. Increase your font size, reduce screen glare, and consider blue-light glasses.


Skipping Protein at breakfast

Starting your day with a high-carbohydrate meal or nothing at all leads to blood sugar instability that affects your energy, mood, and skin throughout the day. A protein-rich breakfast stabilizes blood sugar from the start and gives your body the amino acids it needs for overnight tissue repair.


Drinking Through a Straw

The repeated puckering motion involved in drinking through a straw contributes to fine lines around the mouth over time. It's a small thing, but small repeated movements add up over years.


Chronic Stress Without Any Outlet

Elevated cortisol from chronic unmanaged stress breaks down collagen, disrupts sleep, increase inflammation, and accelerates cellular aging. Even brief daily practices like ten minutes of walking outside, journaling, or slow breathing have measurable effects on cortisol levels.


Using Your Phone in Bed

Reading through this list, I'll be honest — I was guilty of more than a few of these. And some of them I only stopped doing once I understood why they were a problem.

The pillowcase one genuinely surprised me. I switched to a silk pillowcase a while back mostly out of curiosity, and the difference in how my skin felt int the morning was more noticeable than I expected. It's one of those changes that feels almost too small to matter — until it does.

The neck and hands point hit close to home too. I already mentioned this in my skincare post, but I'm a firm believer that your neck is part of your face. Every product I use on my face goes down to my neck, without exception. As for my hands — SPF every morning, no excuses.

The stress one is real, and I think it's the hardest habit to address because life doesn't always give you the option to simply stress less. What I've found helpful is not trying to eliminate stress — that's unrealistic — but giving it somewhere to go. A walk outside, some quiet time in the morning before the day starts, even just sitting with a cup of green tea without a screen in front of me. Small things, but they add up.

And the phone in bed? Still a work in progress, I'll admit. But I'm trying.

The older I get, the more I believe that aging well isn't about grand gestures or expensive interventions. It's about the small daily choices — the ones that are easy to overlook precisely because they seep so minor. Pay attention to the little things. They're doing more than you think.🌿
